Egypt Pyramids facts

The Pyramids of Ancient Egypt were built as tombs for Kings (and Queens), and it was the exclusive privilege to have a Pyramid tomb.

Most of the pyramids can be found on the western side of the Nile River, just into the dry desert. The reason they built the pyramids next to the Nile River was so it would be easier to get the blocks to the pyramid.

The first true pyramid was developed for King Sneferu during the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.

King Khufu’s great pyramid is the largest pyramid (Great Pyramid at Giza). It is well known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, standing at an impressive 146 meters.

There are 138 pyramids discovered in Egypt as of 2008.

Most pyramid complexes had satellite pyramids and queens’ pyramids. The satellite pyramids were too small to serve as burial places, and their purpose remains mysterious.

  1. The pyramids are possibly the most enduring monuments to the ancient world. I’ve actually written an article recently outlining what I believe to be the ten best facts on these wondeful behemoths.

  2. Most of the contents of this page are completre nonsense.

There is no proof that the Pharaohs built the Pyramids. There is much evidence to suggest that the pyramids were already there, built by some other civilization, and later on were “occupied” by the Pharaohs.

The sheer number of mathematical calculations (half the permeter dvided by the height equals 3.14, or PI, for example ) relating to the dimensions and exact location of the pyramids clearly suggests that with the knowledge available at the time, this would have been an impossible task in the least.

  3. Actually, you also forgot to mention the Bent Pyramid.. it’s ‘oopz, construction flaw’ is pretty interesting. =)

  4. Read The Giza Power Plant by Christopher Dunn an interesting theory…..

  5. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built around 2566 BC by King Khufu (also known as Cheops), remained the tallest building in the world until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889. The Great Pyramid was originally 146 m (481 feet) tall. Now, because of the loss of the outer casing stones, it stands at 137 m (449 feet).
