Dating back some 5000 years ago, chess is one of the world’s most ancient and popular games. Chess is commonly believed to have originated in India during the Gupta empire.

World chess champion J. Capablanca began to play chess at the age of four after seeing his father play many games of chess.

The nation with the largest number of native born Grand Masters per capital is Iceland.
The longest game theoretically possible is 8949 moves.

The word “checkmate” derives from the persian “shah ma” meaning “the king is dead” .

In 1985, the Soviet player Gary Kasparov became the youngest World Champion ever at the age of 22 years and 210 days.
