Guns are used nearly 2.5 millioin times a year for self-defense.Americans use firearms to defend themselves from criminals at least 764,000 times a year.

There are about 60 million handguns in the United States. About 2 to 3 million new and used handguns are sold each year.

One-quarter of adults in the United States own a gun and only about one in six Americans (16%) own a handgun. That means that five out of six Americans do not own a handgun.

In Great Britain, handguns are outlawed, and possession of long guns is severely restricted. Yet, despite strict gun-control, as of 1995, rates for robbery, assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft in England and Wales had surpassed those here in the States. On average, for all 4 crimes, English rates were double U.S. rates.
